A Group Of Stahrs

Our Family Life…All Together

Disneyland

Well, here we are almost a month after our big trip to Disneyland and I’ve only just finished editing the photos.  It’s been rough but they are done and now ready to post!  So bear with me…it’s gonna be a big one.  I’m starting with seeing our friends first.   First we visited at the Laughrey’s where the Shertzers, Pikes, and (at least a few of them) Bolanders joined us.  It was great aside from the crazy rain storm.

I’m always amazed at how the kids just kind of pick up where they left off when we see each other.  Like there weren’t years in between visits, just a days.  They all had a blast and it was great to see everyone in one place.  After a day at Valley park in Hermosa beach,we ended our week at the Shertzer’s house and tagged along to the beach…

While Amy did her thing, the girls, well, I’m not sure what they were doing but I’m sure Amy made them look great!

We headed back to Amy’s house where we joined by the Laughrey girls for a yummy dinner (and for those of you who know Amy and how well she cooks, you know that yummy is an understatement!).

When we planned this trip, we decided to stay at the Disneyland Hotel so that we could stay longer at the parks.  We were able to see the fireworks and water shows.  Which was worth the extra cash for the resort! Plus the parks were within walking distance. One morning we went to Goofy’s Kitchen for breakfastand characters joined us throughout our meal to say “Hi” or mess with Jamie’s hair…The wait staff brought Jacob a birthday treat which was a huge surprise to him…We headed to Disneyland where we celebrated Jacob’s birthday at The Carnation Inn.  Pat E. Cake hosted the party by singing and dancing while the guests decorated their very own cakes.  Jacob then joined a parade of birthday kids that ended with meeting Micky and Minnie.

Jacob said it was the “best birthday ever” and is already making plans for next year.  Here is the rest of our visit at Disneyland and California Adventure in pictures…

So there you have it.  Our Spring break trip.  We had so much fun and enjoyed every minute of it!

Mothers’ Tea

Jacob’s preschool held a Mothers’ Tea this morning for all the mamas.  It was similar to the Dinner with Dads that Jeremiah was invited to in January.

When I arrived, there was a note to take a seat and wait for the class to arrive.  So I took a snap of my place at the table…First I have to say that I love the foot butterfly.  I remember Jacob coming home from school saying they had painted his feet for a project and then said that I wasn’t really supposed to hear that.  I never expected this!  And on the back of the paper laying at my place setting was an interview of what Jacob thinks of me.My Mom…My mom is 15 years old.  Her favorite food is lettuce, I mean salad.  Mommy’s favorite store is the market.  My mommy’s job is to bake stuff.  When mommy has some free time, she likes to rest on the couch.  I love it when mommy makes spaghetti for dinner.  I love it when mommy plays the twister track with me.  I make my mommy laugh when I tell her jokes.  I love my mommy more than my favorite toys.

Now to clarify on those interesting facts from my stinker of a five-year old.  I am not 15 (but thanks, buddy!).  I do eat a lot of salad, so I can see where he thinks this.  I am not sure what “market” he is talking about for my favorite store.  I do “bake stuff”.  I guess reading isn’t something I do in my free time since I apparently rest on the couch.  He does like spaghetti.  He did get a new hot wheels double dare snare track that is pretty cool.  I think I played with it one time.  Although Jacob does like to tell jokes, they are typically not very funny.  He makes me laugh with his quirkiness.  I am honored that he loves me more than his favorite toys!

The class sang a few songs that were just amazing.  I know kids at this age can’t carry a tune (much like this mama) but I can’t help but love kids singing.  It’s just so happy and they are so proud to be doing it.  It’s really one of my favorite things ever.Especially when there are moves…After the kids performed their songs, we had a little feast of muffins, fruit, cookies, and mini quiche.  It was a lovely morning.  I’m glad I was able to spend it with my favorite 5-year-old boy.

Ten On Tuesday

1.  Jacob turned 5 last week and it’s time to I post about it.

2.  While we were in California for his birthday (I will be posting about that another day), we did come home to have a little family celebration and for him to have his star cake…3.  He was pretty happy to have his chocolate cake with chocolate icing…and us singing…4.  Then it was time to dive into the presents…5.  Being 5 means you get a big bike…6.  He even obliged me by letting me snap a few of his fiveness…

7.  Also turning 5 means you start the “annual date”.  I was so excited about it.  The girls have so much fun with Dad when they go out and I wanted that so badly with Jacob.  I apparently made him nervous about it.  Oops!  He recovered and got excited too.  He made Jeremiah take him to Costco to pick out some flowers, washed the car, and knocked on the door so I had to answer and let him in.  He was a true gentleman…8.  He told me I looked nice as we walked out to the car.  He even held my hand.  When we got to Zio’s (his choice), he asked me to open the door and then he held it open for me.  We were seated and he decided what he wanted to eat.  We ordered and then played a couple of games of tic tac toe while we waited.  While we were eating, we talked about chickens and roosters, desserts, his presents, and the rain to name a few things.  We ordered dessert and chatted a bit more.  When we left he opened and held the door for me and a couple of other customers.  He was so sweet.  I think he had a lot of fun.  I know I did.

9.  I am pretty sure that date meant more to me than it did to him in all of his fiveness.  But I still have a few years, right?

10.  When we got home, Jacob allowed Jeremiah to take a couple of pictures of us together.  This is my favorite…

Happy Tuesday!

Leader Day

Jacob was class leader today at school.  Since it was the last day before Spring Break and his birthday happens to be on Monday, they celebrated his birthday.  He was so excited.  I asked what he wanted to take for snack and he said, “Jacobobs” without hesitation.  I asked if he wanted to make them colorful.  He said, “sure”.  So I used one of my pins on pinterest and made rainbow fruit kabobs.I was happy with the way they turned out.  I used strawberries, cuties slices, pineapple chunks, green grapes, blueberries, blackberries, and red grapes.  ROYGBIV!Jacob was pretty pleased with them too.  According to him, his classmates loved them!  We will be doing these again.

Ten On Tuesday

1.  St. Patrick’s Day was on Saturday.  And, while we aren’t Irish or drink green beer, it’s a fun day for the kids who like to wear green.

I mean, Jacob does love green and the girls get a kick out of four-leaf clovers and such.  So this is what we had for lunch.  Shamrock sandwiches (with or without tomato) and Granny Smith apple slices (not pictured)…

2.  I also made some mint chocolate chip cupcakes with vanilla mint buttercream.  They liked those too. 3.  Jeremiah was gone for most of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday due to recognition (remember that USAFA grads?).  So the Baby Bulls of Squadron 6 became Big Bulls.  He’s so proud.  It was not as rough as I was thinking it would be (being alone with the kids for that length of time) but I’m not really looking forward to the next time.

4.  Check out the business blog to see the “Green Things” I’ve made recently.  I made my first truffles (which were pretty yummy according to my critics…ie The Kids) and a green velvet cake.

5.  We are going to California on Saturday!  Someone has a pretty big birthday coming up.  He’s pretty happy we are celebrating it at Disneyland.  We are all excited!

6.  Mazie taught Jamie and I our kyroogi poomse (sparring form) for taekwondo this weekend.  We both knew the steps, just out of order.  She was a good teacher.  I am grateful she had the patience to teach me.

7.  Jacob is leader at school on Thursday.  He wants to take rainbow fruit kabobs and cheese sticks for snack.  I’m hoping I have enough time tomorrow to put them together.

8.  Mazie learned to do laundry yesterday.  From start to finish.  She put it into the washer with the detergent, switched it over to the dryer (pictured), and even folded it.  I was very proud.  She also knows that most of the laundry is done during the week…while she is at school…backfire.

9.  And Jamie has been working on ixl (a math computer program through the school).  Spring break doesn’t mean no work around here!

10.  Max (the resident pet) got into a little tiff with her neighbor today.  The neighbor’s dog is a male and a few years younger than Max but they’ve always kind of played together.  Today he was actually attacking her and trying to bite her.  I noticed the two of them running in our yard this afternoon but Max wasn’t running with him.  She was trying to get away from him.  So I called her inside but he just kept after her.  It was weird.  She had a spot on her back that was a bit sensitive after.   I’m not sure what happened but she was shaking after I finally got her into the house.

Happy Tuesday!

Second Grade Music Concert

Thursday evening Jamie’s second grade class sang their hearts out for all the parents to enjoy.  And enjoy they did!  It was spectacular.  The music, according to their awesome music teacher was intended for fourth or fifth graders but she felt the second graders could do it.  They did such a great job.

There were some serious moves…

There was a speaking part for the coolest second grader ever.  She was actually loud in the microphone! There was some vouge-ing…Look out Madonna, right?  There was a song where Jamie’s class only sang.  They twirled around umbrellas and danced.  It was great.  I didn’t get any pictures of that one because I couldn’t see Jamie from where I was sitting.  She was behind another student’s umbrella.  Trust me, it was a good song.  And then the big finally! Those kids were having way too much fun on that stage!  I have to say that this was one of my favorite programs so far.  They really did a great job.  One last one of Jamie and her BFF.  They are so cute together…

Ten on Wednesday

1.  Yeah, I know.  I’m a day late and a dollar short.  What’s new?

2.  Friday was Dr. Seuss’s 108th birthday.  Did anyone celebrate?  We did.  I made green eggs and ham for breakfast. The kids were excited about it but only took a few bites each and then went on to a “normal” breakfast.  Jacob and I read Seuss books and watched a couple of short movies in the afternoon.  We also went to see The Lorax on Saturday as a family.  We totally recommend the movie.  It was true to the book with added parts to make it a full movie.  It was great!

3.  I completed my first Pinterest project.  I am so excited about it.  What do you think?Jacob walks through the dining room to go to the bathroom and almost walks into the door because he is looking up!  I can’t wait for the girls to see it after school.

4.  And no rainbow is complete without a pot ‘o gold, right? This sits right under the rainbow on the table.

5.  Jacob scolded me for standing on a bar stool while attaching the rainbow to the wall/ceiling.  He said that I should be using the step-ladder.  I had to explain that I couldn’t reach while standing on the ladder.  He said, “Oh yeah, you are kind of short.”  Then he told me that if I fall it he was going to say, “I told you so” because he did.  I didn’t fall so we are good!

6.  Mazie started TCAP testing yesterday.  It’s the same as CSAP of last year.  The state just changed the name.  She was so nervous about the first test.  I thought this year would be different since her teacher was purposely playing down the test by calling it “TCRAP” and saying it wasn’t a huge deal.  I guess he just talked about it too much.  Oh and said “Do your best” which means extra pressure.

7.  Jamie has her second grade music program tomorrow evening.  She had to take an umbrella to school for it.  I can’t wait to see what that’s all about!  She’s so excited about it.

8.  Many of you know how Jacob feels about buttons on his shirts.  To put it mildly, he hates them.  He says they hurt him.  He doesn’t mind the buttons on his pants, just his shirts.  He picked out a Little Man suit for our big date at the end of the month.  Black dress pants, a light green button down shirt, a black pin striped vest, and a matching tie (and don’t forget the dress socks and shoes).  Seriously, he looks so big and handsome in it.  I can’t wait to have our big birthday date.

9.  Or maybe I can.  That means he will be 5 after all.  I’m not really ready to admit that I have big kids now.

10.  We are so excited about Spring Break in a few weeks!  The girls have two weeks off.  During their last week is Jacob’s and Jeremiah’s Spring Break.  That’s the week we are going to be in California!

Bowling for Buzzards

We went to Academy Lanes to go bowling.  We had never been bowling before with the kids.  In fact, it’s been too long to count since Jeremiah and I had even been bowling.  To say it was an adventure is a huge understatement!

The girls were awesome.  Mazie had a great form…

Jamie even got a strike!

Jacob was pretty good at being patient, since when he would roll the ball it would take 30 minutes to get to the pins…

But he was very happy that he did manage to knock down some pins…It was fun.  The kids had a grand time and it was nice to do something together as a family.  Here, if you are interested, are the scores of our two games.Yes, Mazie did beat me in the first game.

You don’t have to look at Jeremiah’s score.  We were using the bumpers.  I was holding back since we were playing the kids.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Ten On Tuesday

1.  This was my valentine from my littlest sweetheart…

2.  I made brownies for dessert that night and decided to make them extra special by cutting them out with a heart cookie cutter…

3.  I also cut cheese with a small heart cookie cutter for Jacob’s party at school and served them along side some pretzel twists.  Jamie had a surprise heart-shaped cheese with her lunch and Mazie had heart-shaped red peppers in her lunch.  It was a heart-y day!

4.  We took the kids bowling for the first time last weekend.  I’m not sure what we were thinking but it turned out to be quite fun.  Plus there was no shame in our (the adults) using the bumpers.  This deserves its own post so pictures will come soon.

5.  The girls had off from school since Friday.  Friday was a “professional development day”, Monday was the holiday, and today was just a day off.  There is no one month during the year where they go every single school day.

6.  Jacob did enjoy his day off with the girls yesterday though.  And he was super excited that they were along to pick him up from school today.  It was as if he had forgotten they had off.  He couldn’t wait to tell them all about his day.  This is funny since I usually only get the run down of what was for snack and if they went outside to play.

7.  I was invited to Ring Dance.  Since I haven’t been there since, um, 1998, I’m assuming I need a nice dress.  Any suggestions on where to get something formal without having to sell the car to pay for it?  I haven’t shopped for a formal dress since I shopped for my wedding gown.   Yeah, we kind of were “busy” when an air force formal thing came up before.  Jeremiah can’t really get out of this one, can he?

8.  I’ve been trying to get Jacob to read for a few months now.  He’s been pretty hesitant since he knows he can’t read like the girls.  I keep trying to explain that the only way he will read like the girls is if he practices but he won’t have anything to do with it.  Today Jamie was looking at his BOB books.  He decided to pick on and sat down with it.  He actually read the words.  He’s been holding out on me, the little stinker.  I have a video but have no idea how to put it on the blog…Anyone?

9.   I can’t wait for The Lorax to come out next weekend.  We are all going to see it on next Saturday.  Anyone else going?

10.  I’m ready for Spring.  Not that we’ve had much snow but I’m ready for the flowers and green grass and afternoons playing outside.

Happy Tuesday!

Ten On Tuesday

1.  Hello?  My name is Megan and it’s been two weeks since I’ve blogged.  There I said it.  Let get on with blogging, shall we?

2.  Every January, Jacob’s preschool has a “Dinner with Dads”.  It’s a spaghetti dinner that the church and teachers put together to celebrate dads since they aren’t in school over Father’s Day.  I have to say that I’m not really sure who was more excited about it…Dad or Jacob.  And, in this house, we have to get the silly one out of the way first…

Aren’t they handsome?  Jacob even wore a shirt with buttons!  Anyone who knows Jacob knows that this is huge for him.  He hates buttons.  So he dressed nicely and even picked out a button shirt for dad to wear.  They went to dinner.  One of Jacob’s teachers took this one…As you can see, the kids had crafts made.  Jacob made a tent and set up a camping area.  The teachers helped him glue his head to figures (pop sticks) and he was fishing and sleeping in the tent!  It sits in Jeremiah’s office at the Academy today.

3.  The girls had a crazy hair day last week.  Jamie opted for 8 pony tails!  Mazie decided to use almost every clip they own and one pony. When they turned around for me to take the picture Mazie giggled at herself and said, “I have no idea why I’m smiling when the camera is behind me.”  When it was bath time, Mazie counted 16 clips and found one when she was washing her hair.  So she used 17!

4.  We’ve adopted Pizza Friday from our good friends in Minnesota.  It’s just easier always knowing what is for supper at least one day a week.  The kids got a little creative the last time I made the dough and opted for shaped pizzas…

There is a small oval cheese pizza, a small diamond cheese pizza without sauce, and a small heart pizza with black olives.  I’ll let you figure out which one when to which kid.

5.  The kids were supposed to have a half day on Friday and it was cancelled due to snow! It was a fun snow day and a three-day weekend.  They even got to play in snow for a little.  It’s mostly gone now though.

6.  The kids had dental appointments last week as well.  They all had great check ups.  No cavities which means they were each able to bang the gong…I was only able to get Jacob doing it and he did take a running start to hit the gong really loud! (which is why he’s blurry)

7.  I am currently reading The 5 Love Languages by Gary D. Chapman.  It’s fascinating and I think it should be read by more people before they get married.  Maybe our country’s divorce rate wouldn’t be so high if they did!  Just sayin’.

8.  I am addicted to Pinterest.  There are so many cute crafty things I want to do but just don’t have the time.  I need an extra day a week just set aside for the things I would love to try.

9.  Does anyone know about the “Cake Bill” here in Colorado?  There are a few representatives that have put together a bill to allow people to sell cakes and cookies out of their home instead of owning a store front.  (Yep, that means I’ve been doing it illegally)  It was passed by the Colorado House of Representatives last week!  It moves onto the Colorado Senate (tentatively) on Friday.  It would be nice to be legitimate for the first time since November 2009!  I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

10.  Jeremiah and I made homemade fortune cookies on Sunday.  His firsties (seniors at the Academy) are getting their bases tomorrow at a dinner.  Jeremiah thought of the idea to put the base coordinates on a strip of paper and put it into the cookie.  I know that he is a dork ;-).  I found a recipe that seemed tasty.  It took almost the whole afternoon since we could do only two at a time but they turned out pretty cool.  The kids had the three that were left over and said they were tasty.

Happy Tuesday!
